Naomi Hopwood – 2012 - 2018: "I worked at Deans Creative English School for 6 years during which time I matured as a teacher and even gained the confidence to apply for and complete my Cambridge DELTA.
What I appreciate most about Deans is its professionality and commitment to providing quality teaching, which goes hand in hand with an emphasis on teacher development. Teachers benefit from weekly training sessions (always interesting and informative), observations by the Director of Studies and the opportunity to observe and be observed by other teachers. Ian Deans is always available for a chat and will help you out if you have any difficulties. There is a real community feel at Deans from the sharing of teaching ideas to grabbing a cuppa in the teachers´ room. Staff frequently get together at the end of the school day to have a drink at the bar next door and chill out.
The students at Deans range from very young learners to adults and I enjoyed the variety of being able to teach different ages and levels. Classes are relatively small with a maximum of ten students and most of the students are enthusiastic and motivated. All classes use a course book and there are ample extra resources in the teacher’s room and classrooms including games, toys, books and worksheets. I spent some great years at Deans Creative English School and as well as growing professionally also made some good friends".
Melissa Humphrys: 2015/18:"I worked as a teacher at Deans Creative English School for 3 years. My experience teaching there and living in Badajoz was very positive. The school has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and I was supported in all aspects of life in a foreign country. A room was booked for me at a reasonably priced hotel for my first few nights in town and Carmen offered me help with opening a bank account and other complicated practical matters which can be tricky in another language! As to the school itself, Ian ran weekly staff meetings keeping everyone up to date and providing lots of useful and practical lesson ideas that you can use straightaway. All members of staff were encouraged to contribute to these sessions and as teachers we were given freedom to be creative in class and teach in our own personal style. There are also plenty of resources available in the school from textbooks and reference material to photocopiables and games!"
Jacqueline McHugh 2018/19: "Dear Ian, This letter is just a note of thanks following my decision to move on to Portugal for the next academic year. It is with a heavy heart that I leave Deans Creative School. I only wish you could uproot the academy and come along with me… However, I reckon that might be too much trouble!! It is also very sad for me to be leaving such an incredibly fun, energetic and passionate team (handpicked by you). Thank you for the opportunity this year, as being surrounded by like-minded professionals, with a great sense of humour, has really made me feel at home here in Badajoz. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this team"
